Purdue, John Spencer-84, of Little Egg Harbor, NJ passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends on January 29, 2026. Spencer was born in Newark, NJ to Bunnie and Jack Purdue. He enjoyed growing up in Newark and later Pompton Plains with his brothers Russell and Robert and sister Pamela. Spencer graduated from Butler High School in 1959 and played baseball at East Tennessee State. He worked in sales and the restaurant industry for over thirty years. He was most proud of the family he raised with his beloved wife of 55 years, Sue. Spencer always enjoyed spending time with his family and friends especially any celebration with food and music. He shared his sense of humor and big heart with everyone he met.
Spencer is survived by his children: son Jack Purdue, daughter Maureen Wallace and husband Tom, daughter Kristen Davis and husband Stephen, son Matthew Purdue and wife Danielle Mathewson as well as his grandchildren: Jake, Emily (Crystal), Sarah (Eddie), Josh (Leah), Ryan, Patrick, Maris and great granddaughter Thea. He is also survived by loving family members: Twinkie, Michael, Dex, Emily, Olive, and Auggie Polizzi as well Abraham Addy. Spencer was predeceased by his wife Susanne and son in law Edward Madden in 2018. Friends and family may gather at Wood Funeral Home in Tuckerton, NJ on Wednesday February 4th from 6-9 pm and Thursday February 5th from 9:30-10:30 am. A mass will be held at St. Theresa’s RC Church in Little Egg Harbor, NJ on Thursday February 5th at 11am followed by a celebration of life at 1:30pm. All are welcome.
